Gestational Diabetes

Gestational diabetes is a type of medical condition that expectant mothers can develop during their pregnancies.  When expectant mothers have developed diabetes during gestation, their bodies aren't able to sufficiently use the sugar known as glucose that is in their bloodstreams.  Therefore, the sugar levels in their blood become elevated if not closely monitored and controlled.

Due to the fact that elevated sugar levels can be very harmful to both mothers and their babies, it is important that gestational diabetes is diagnosed right away and that treatment options are provided.  If the diabetes is left untreated, the baby may develop birth defects like jaundice.  Additionally, because there is so much sugar in the mother's bloodstream when she has gestational diabetes, her child may be born at a very high birth weight which can cause complications during the birthing process.  Having a large baby can lead to the need for an emergency cesarean section or even cause mothers to have seizures (eclampsia).

Usually, women will not develop gestational diabetes during the first 3 months of their pregnancies as it is more common during the second and third trimester.  Women who have gestational diabetes will have to be careful throughout the durations of their pregnancies.  However, once their infants are born, this form of diabetes will usually go away.

A Birth Injury Lawyer Can Help

It is imperative that gestational diabetes is always diagnosed and treated by the medical professionals who are treating expectant mothers.  Anytime medical professionals fail to recognize the signs of gestational diabetes, they place mothers and their infants at great risk for harm.  If mothers have gestational diabetes and their doctors fail to diagnose and treat this serious condition, mothers may choose to take legal action if they incur harm or if their babies are harmed.
