Microcephaly

Microcephaly is a serious medical condition that is present when an infant is born with a head that is much smaller than infants of the same age and sex.  The condition is called microcephaly because "micro" means small and the term "cephaly" refers to a person's head.

When infants have microcephaly, they may also have some learning disabilities and developmental delays as this condition is known to cause brain damage and mental retardation.  This is due to the fact that the head size is small and therefore, the brain may be underdeveloped.  Still, there are children with microcephaly who grow up with no form of brain damage and who have normal intelligence.

Numerous things can lead to an infant suffering from microcephaly.  However, the leading causes of this medical condition are chemical exposure and genetic problems that run in families.  In cases involving chemical exposure or environmental hazards, numerous causes could affect infants during gestation.  For example, if the mother has an infection or is exposed to radiation, her child may develop microcephaly.  Other causes include substance abuse, lack of nutrients, alcohol consumption and maternal diabetes.

Microcephaly may also develop after infants have been born if they sustain brain injuries or suffer from oxygen deprivation during the birthing process.  These types of cases usually occur when medical professionals act negligently and/or fail to monitor expectant mothers and their infants.  In these instances, if microcephaly was caused by medical negligence, parents should consider speaking with an experienced birth injury lawyer.  If it can be proven that medical negligence led to infants developing microcephaly, parents may be entitled to monetary compensation for their children's medical expenses, future medical expenses, lost quality of life and pain and suffering.
