Pregnancy Induced Hypertension

Pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH) is also referred to as toxemia and preeclampsia and is a medical condition that expecting mothers may develop as their pregnancies progress.   Usually, PIH does not occur during the first 4.5 months of a woman's pregnancy.  Rather, this medical condition tends to develop during the latter half of gestation.  Most women are not aware that they have pregnancy induced hypertension because the symptoms are not very obvious.  Women generally learn that they have pregnancy induced hypertension after their doctors conduct tests and they note high blood pressure, significant amounts of protein in the urine and persistent swelling.

Unfortunately, pregnancy induced hypertension is a common condition that first-time mothers may develop during their pregnancies.  Like all medical conditions, PIH can present risks to both mothers and their infants.  For example, when a woman has pregnancy induced hypertension, the condition can prevent her placenta from getting enough blood.  The placenta is responsible for delivering food and oxygen to infants.  If it cannot provide infants with oxygen and/or food, the baby may not grow, may be delivered prematurely or can even die as a result.  Another risk of PIH is called eclampsia.  Eclampsia can cause mothers to have seizures, which may lead to health problems for mothers and babies.

Thankfully, through preventative measures and ongoing prenatal care, many women with PIH are able to deliver very healthy babies.  Still, there are those tragic cases where PIH has led to infants and mothers incurring debilitating side effects.  Usually, these cases occur when medical professionals fail to diagnose and/or treat PIH.  When this happens, medical professionals, like OBGYNs, can be accused of negligence if the mothers or their infants are harmed and parents choose to obtain the services of a birth injury lawyer to take legal action.
